In theory, selfies are great. They allow you to take a picture of yourself while out and about in the world without having to hassle a stranger to take the photo for you. Reliance on oneself and individual independence is wonderful, right? The problem, though, is that in practice selfies are responsible for (conservative estimate) 88.2% of the problems in the world. People have become obsessed with selfies and even more obsessed with themselves. Everywhere you go whether it be a historical monument or a Burger King, someone is taking a selfie, artificially staging a moment to show off on their social media.
If you have a distaste for selfies, you’re not alone. Artist Stephanie Leigh hates selfies so much she set up an Instagram account where she posts nothing but what she refers to as “anti-selfies.” What is an anti-selfie? Well, she takes a picture where she pretends to be dead. It’s bizarre, hilarious and actually makes a pretty good point.
